How Trends International manages a million-product catalog

Trends International needed to manage bids and track historical performance for one of the largest catalogs on Amazon. Intentwise was the ideal solution.

How Intentwise helped:

  • Automatically saved historical data across 1-million products to streamline reporting to licensors
  • Made it easy to write, executive, and copy dynamic bidding rules across many different campaigns
  • Instantly segmented and rolled up metrics to speed up the troubleshooting process

The problem:

By some measures, Trends International, a brand that sells posters and calendars under that name and also its ART.com brand, has one of the biggest catalogs on Amazon. It sells over a million products—if you count all of the variations on its core parent ASINs.

Before Intentwise, managing a catalog of that size was impossible. Take something simple as licensing and compliance, for instance: The company has many brand licensing partnerships, and those licensors want accurate, year-over-year numbers showcasing growth and advertising spend.

Pulling that data once meant constantly downloading and collating reports from Amazon. Amazon’s lookback window is limited to 90 days, so Trends International would need to remember to download those reports for countless different ASINs and constantly combine them.

It took forever.

The solution:

With the Intentwise Ad Optimizer, however, benchmarking for its partners—and for its own internal teams—just takes a few seconds.

Intentwise automatically saves and organizes historical data across the Trends International catalog, meaning that the company can now send reports to its licensors in minutes.

The basic work of running the account is so much easier, too. Let’s say the company discovers it’s overspending on ads into a new month.

Previously, Brian Czenkusch, E-Commerce Marketplace Advertising Manager at Trends International, would have to go in and manually update all of the line items to bring down the spend. With Intentwise, however, segmenting metrics is easy, and so is writing at scale.

Extrapolated across all of the products in its catalog, “I honestly couldn’t quantify how long it would take” without Intentwise, said Czenkusch. “It would just take forever.”

Czenkusch oversees three brands for the company—Art.com, AllPosters, and Trends International. Because of the breadth of his work, everything he does needs to happen at scale. Data must be collected at scale, bid strategies must be executed at scale, and performance must be analyzed across thousands of products at once.

Intentwise is the only plausible way that one person could manage ads for a million products like this. Intentwise makes it easy to isolate problems and performance swings through our What Changed feature, and then execute AI- or rules-based bid strategies in response.

For David Hosei, Director of E-Commerce at Trends International, the platform has become a lifesaver. When he logs in, “I can quickly see what the top spenders are, what the top revenue drivers are,” Hosei said. “You need a tool like Intentwise to manage a catalog as big as ours.”
